Mark Johnsen
President, Founder, Brewer
Mark is originally from Glen Rock, New Jersey. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1985 with a degree in Business Administration. From 1985 to 1996, he was a field artillery officer in the Army with tours in California, Oklahoma, and Germany, including Desert Storm. Mark's last duty station was Pocatello, Idaho where he pursued an MBA at Idaho State. This is also where he started homebrewing. His hobby spiraled out of control and eventually, Mark moved to South Carolina and RJ Rockers was born.
RJ Rockers began as a brewpub in downtown Spartanburg in 1997. In 2003, Mark moved the business and developed it into the first microbrewery in town. He has expanded it into the flourishing business it is today, with markets in Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Mark has a hand in making every single drop of beer the brewery produces. He knows exactly what goes into each brew and quality checks each batch himself.
Mark is active in the Spartanburg community:
- The Charles Lea Center Foundation, Trustee 2002-2008
- Tyger River Presbyterian Church, Elder
Awards:
- 2008 Carolina Championships of Beer (Gold: Light Rock, Bronze: Patriot Pale, Bald eagle Brown, Honey Amber)
- 2008 World Beer Championships (Silver: Buckwheat)
